Hack Reactor Announces Vision2020: 50/50 Gender Balance by Year 2020
One of the largest coding bootcamps in the industry releases the industry’s first Diversity and Inclusion Report, highlighting their vision for 50/50 gender balance by 2020.
San Francisco, Calif. (May 12, 2017) Hack Reactor, the country’s leading network of coding bootcamps, announces the release of the industry’s first Diversity and Inclusion Report. Just weeks after the official launch of their Telegraph Track program, this Diversity and Inclusion Report further drives their commitment to increasing opportunities for underrepresented people in tech.
“It is important to hold ourselves accountable, especially in the tech industry,” says Albrey Brown, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Hack Reactor. “This report creates a baseline for us to grow and revolutionize the industry. 50/50 by 2020 is a vision that will shift our culture and the way we see our day to day.”
Since 2014, Hack Reactor set forth a mission to support career transitioners in underrepresented communities. Through community partnerships with programs like Code Tenderloin, Operation Spark, and The Last Mile, scholarship programs including their $1.3 million scholarship fund, and expanded product accessibility with Hack Reactor Prep and Remote Part-Time, Hack Reactor has been the leading bootcamp to address the calls for making the tech industry more diverse and inclusive.
Today’s release of the industry’s first Diversity and Inclusion Report is another step towards shifting the foundation of the future of education. Vision 2020 states “By Q1 of 2020, Hack Reactor’s incoming class of students will be made up of 50/50 gender balance and 20% underrepresented people of color.”
As Hack Reactor looks towards 2020, they will be implementing key measures across the board to ensure underrepresented members feel accepted, embraced, and have equal access. Some measures include:
Incorporating cultural competency education within the curriculum
Expanding affinity groups to support underrepresented students during and after Hack Reactor
Connecting employers with top diverse talent via scholarship partnerships
Launching 80/20 Projects for staff to participate in D&I initiatives
Releasing annual Diversity & Inclusion reports
Hack Reactor has already started the conversation with employers to increase diverse talent in the tech industry. “These [scholarship partnerships] allow more people to consider careers in web development, and is one of the many ways Facebook is working with [Hack Reactor] to support initiatives designed to build a pipeline of diverse talent,” says Facebook, who recently donated $250K to Hack Reactor’s Telegraph Track program.
