Sure, a large paycheck is great, but there are tons of other work perks that matter — when you’re reviewing a software engineer job offer, understanding your benefits package is just as important as evaluating your salary.
But paid vacation and health insurance are barely scratching the surface at some companies that hire software engineers.
In addition to a competitive six-figure salary, new hires can expect to earn lucrative signing bonuses and stock options. But it doesn’t stop there. Just about anything you can dream of could be part of your new company’s employee benefits program.

It’s no secret that working at Facebook is lucrative. But just how lucrative might blow your mind. On average, new hires at the social media giant receive a signing bonus worth more than $45,000. On top of that, you can take advantage of tons of other perks at Facebook, like a 30-day paid break every five years, “baby cash” for newborn expenses, autism coverage, cancer care, transgender coverage and more. The company is currently hiring software engineers in California, Washington, Pennsylvania and beyond.
Asana
Got your eye on a comfy mid-century modern sofa? A treadmill desk? A giant split-leaf philodendron plant? You got it. Asana, the company that makes workplace organization tools, offers employees a $10,000 allowance for office furniture. On top of that, the company also provides employees with three, fresh-cooked meals each day, free executive coaching, free insurance, 16 weeks of paid parental leave and more. Right now, they have lots of open software engineering jobs in San Francisco and Iceland. Signing bonuses tend to range between $35,000 and $50,000 at Asana.
Zillow
It’s tough being a working parent, especially if you travel for your job. But new moms and dads can rest a little easier when traveling for work at Zillow, which offers free breast milk shipping. The family-friendly perks don’t stop there, either. The real estate marketplace company also offers adoption assistance, 16 weeks of paid maternity leave, nursing rooms and heavily subsidized insurance (they cover 100% of the cost for employees and 80% of the cost for dependents). Zillow also has a special “Reboot & Recharge” program that allows tenured employees to take up to six weeks off to replenish their energy. With an average signing bonus of more than $33,000, Pinterest is an enticing place to work as a software engineer. While you’re at work at this social media company, you’ll also get “Pin-worthy” meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner, access to tons of organized social clubs, unlimited vacation time, free therapy sessions and more. If you’ve got a family, you’ll be happy to know the company offers parental leave, adoption benefits, fertility benefits and support for egg freezing and surrogacy. Pinterest has offices all over the world — and they need tons of software engineers to start ASAP.
VMware
Some companies might say they’re family-friendly, but don’t actually walk the walk. VMware does. Just a few of the family-centered perks at VMware, which specializes in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technologies: back-up daycare if your sitter cancels at the last minute, $12,000 toward adoption or surrogacy and a research-based program that helps children with developmental disabilities or learning or behavioral challenges. The company has many open positions right now, including lots in software engineering. You can expect a signing bonus between $5,000 and $60,000.
Dropbox
Whatever you need to simplify your life, Dropbox can make it happen. The cloud storage company will do your gym laundry, feed you breakfast, lunch and dinner, customize your work station for the perfect ergonomics, make you a latte and more. Even better? Signing bonuses here range from $5,000 to $55,000, with an average of around $25,000. Dropbox needs talented software engineers to work at its massive new San Francisco headquarters, as well as at its offices in New York, Seattle, Austin and beyond.
