Career Services: Using AI in your tech job search

Participating in the tech job search.

AI is everywhere, sparking conversation about its capabilities, risks, and potential to transform the ways we approach challenges. At Hack Reactor, we think about AI often, especially in the context of how AI tools can boost engineering productivity and how these tools can support our grads as they search for tech jobs and launch new careers.

For our graduates, one of the most promising ways we’ve seen AI tools make a difference is by helping them streamline and strengthen the job search process. For this post, we checked in with our Pathway Program careers team to share practical, responsible ways you can use AI to boost your tech job search.

How AI can support your tech job search

AI tools can be helpful when used with intention, including when you’re looking for a tech job. They can help you create more effective application materials, identify jobs that align with your skills, and prepare for interviews.

Here are three ways we incorporate AI into our career coaching at Hack Reactor:

1. Resume Optimization

A platform like Hiration can leverage ChatGPT to help tailor your resume. The tool can rewrite bullet points, highlight relevant skills, and improve formatting. In our Pathway Program, we guide students and grads on how to make the most of this tool to ensure their resumes stand out.

2. Job Matching

During the bootcamp, students get access to Huntr, a job search platform that includes a valuable Insights tool. This feature analyzes job descriptions to extract key skills, experience, and preferences. You can use this information to adjust your resume or cover letter or prepare for an interview more effectively.

3. Interview Preparation

The Pathway Program includes 1:1 career coaching, but supplementing that live instruction with AI-powered interview tools can help you get even more practice and experience. Hiration is one such tool, but there are many others online, and they can help you practice common technical and behavioral interview questions through mock interview features. These tools offer feedback that can help you sharpen your responses and gain more confidence.

A note of caution when using AI

While AI tools can be helpful, it’s important not to rely on them too heavily. Avoid copying and pasting AI-generated content directly into your application materials. Instead, treat AI suggestions as a starting point, then revise and personalize the content so it reflects your unique experience, voice, and goals.

Hiring managers can often spot content that feels generic or copied/pasted from AI, so take the time to make your materials your own.

By thoughtfully integrating AI into your job search strategy, you can streamline your efforts, save time, and present yourself more effectively to potential employers. Stay curious and keep an eye on emerging tools to continue refining your approach.
